Loving the Difficult Dog

A memoir about loving two reactive dogs, and the framework I built to understand them.
Some dogs don't fit the training-book mold. They bark when they shouldn't, shut down when you least expect it, or make you feel judged every time you leave the house. If that sounds familiar, you're not doing it wrong, and you're not alone. This is the story of life with Rosco, a fear-based worrier, and Rei, a Korean village dog rescue who reacts out of frustration, and what it took to finally understand them.

This isn't a training guide. It's the honest, sometimes messy story of learning to see my dogs clearly, built on Kim Brophey's L.E.G.S. framework and the four-part approach I developed from living it myself.

  • ...inspiring a greater appreciation for dogs that are frequently misunderstood.

    Linda O'Reilly

  • Well written, to the point, nonjudgmental.

    K.B., advanced reader

  • The overarching advice to work to better understand your dog, build trust and then meet them where they are really resonated.
